As a Saint Louis, MO artist, this piece carries a message for my city. The Fleur-de-lis is one of the symbols of Saint Louis. By placing it within a circle, it resembles a peace symbol. This symbol is juxtaposed over a map of the city of Saint Louis. This pastel painting was created shortly after the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO, a suburb of St. Louis. The shooting resulted in a great deal of unrest in the city and this composition was my message of peace in a turbulent time.
MaryJo Clark is a former art teacher and Saint Louis artist. She is primarily a mixed-media collage artist, creating paper "painting" by arranging papers of various shapes, colors and textures as elements for creating unique compositions. The non-objective or abstract subject matter of MaryJo's mixed-media collages are designed to evoke unique responses from each viewer. MaryJo also creates pastel paintings. The subject matter of these pieces are usually more representational. Drawing has been the foundation of her artistic practice, and dry pastels provide the perfect medium for the blending of drawing and painting.
